DIANE RADYCKI is an art historian who specializes in European art from the late-nineteenth to the mid-twentieth centuries. Her scholarship focuses on the work of women artists in this period.

Radycki was instrumental in the recent acquisition by the Museum of Modern Art of an important self-portrait by Modersohn-Becker. (“This is all thanks to you!!!” Ann Temkin) It would be the earliest painting by a woman on view in the museum’s collection galleries.

A recipient of Fulbright and AAUW (American Association of University Women) fellowships, her monograph Paula Modersohn-Becker: The First Modern Woman Artist (Yale University Press, 2013) was awarded a Millard Meiss Publication grant by the College Art Association.

Previously Radycki served as the first American translator and editor of The Letters and Journals of Paula Modersohn-Becker (1980), and her dissertation on Modersohn-Becker was the first on a woman artist written in the Fine Arts Department of Harvard University (1993).

In addition, Radycki has compiled a comprehensive inventory for the New York Public Library of the extensive archive of the artist and critic Sidney Tillim (1925–2001), her late husband. Tillim’s drawings and papers document his long career as a painter, his years as a contributing editor writing for Artforum and Arts magazines, and his decades teaching at Bennington College, etc. Of special importance are fifty years of journals that cover the New York art scene during the second half of the twentieth century.

Diane Radycki lives in New York City and is professor emerita at Moravian College, where she directed Payne Gallery.
